'Oldest washing machine found'

07/02/2008
A couple claims to have Britain's oldest washing machine, at 45-years-old, according to a source.

Albert and Mabel Fletcher, from Croxteth in Liverpool, have an English Electric Liberator washer which they bought in 1963, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The couple have even taken the appliance to Australia and back when they moved there for three years.

Mr Fletcher said: "We took it with us because I knew the value of it even then. We went by ship and had cargo space, so there was no problem getting it there."

The pensioners bought the machine for £60 and say that it has done tens of thousands of washes for them and their five children, reports the newspaper.

As the machine is still going strong the couple say they have no plans to replace it.

The Merseyside couple have even seen a replica of their machine in a museum in York.

Recently a couple was awarded the prize of having the UK's oldest working fridge, in a competition run by Time to Change, reported the Liverpool Daily Echo.
