Shoppers look for washing machines over Christmas

28/12/2007
New research has revealed that millions of Britons bought goods online on Christmas Day, with many choosing washing machines.

According to figures produced by the Interactive Media in Retail Group, 4.4 million people bought items online on Christmas Day, spending approximately £84 million.

DeVere Forster, director of Dixons.co.uk, said that the type of products people look for on Christmas Day include washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges and freezers.

People look to "snap up sales bargains in comfort, rather than fighting the crowds on the high street on Boxing Day", he explained.

Other electrical items likely to have proven popular Christmas Day purchases were TVs, digital cameras and mobile phones, he stated.

Overall, British consumers were expected to spend £154 each on Christmas presents this year, research by PayPal revealed.

Christina Hoole, shopping expert at the firm recently said that there are "plenty of bargains" available to people shopping online.
