Black & Decker is planning to cut 170 jobs when it closes its power tool plant in the north-east, according to a source.
The company, which produces lawn mowers, is considering moving some production to the US and Czech Republic, reports the Northern Echo.
Its factory is based in Spennymoor, County Durham, which has recently been hit with more job losses when Electrolux announced it was closing its factory in the town.
The power tool manufacturer currently employs about 320 staff, with areas like finance, manufacturing, sourcing and human resources likely to be affected by the move, said the newspaper
Black & Decker has been suffering annual losses of £6.5 million from the site for the past few years and is looking to save money from the move.
The idea is not a new one for the company who previously cut 1,000 jobs in 2003 when it moved some production to Eastern Europe in an attempt to cut costs, says the newspaper,
Electrolux recently decided to close its cooker factory, in Spennymoor, making 500 people redundant.
